The Computer Science and Business Administration (CSBA) program is interdisciplinary by nature and benefits from the scholarly contributions of a large number of Notre Dame faculty representing an array of academic departments.
Program Overview
The Business Computer Science (BCS) program offers an interdisciplinary curriculum designed for students who wish to combine a comprehensive business education with a rigorous foundation in computer science. Students earn a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree with a primary major in business and a secondary major in computer science, administered jointly by the Mendoza College of Business and the Department of Computer Science and Engineering.
This dual-major pathway prepares graduates to lead in a technology-driven world, equipping them with both the technical expertise of a computer scientist and the strategic insight of a business professional. The program is designed for highly motivated students interested in careers at the intersection of technology, analytics, innovation, and entrepreneurship.
Admission
Students may be admitted directly to the BCS program upon admission to Notre Dame or students may apply to the BCS program in the spring of their first year of study. Students applying to the program must either already be enrolled in the Mendoza College of Business or apply to transfer to the college concurrently with their BCS application. Applicants are competitively selected for a limited number of slots based on an essay or short video and first-year performance. Further information about the application process can be found at the program website.
Students in the BCS program must declare a primary major in the Mendoza College of Business (Accountancy, Business Analytics, Finance, Marketing, or Strategic Management). During their course of study, students must earn a minimum of 122 credit hours and complete the following requirements:

- 1
Students are strongly encouraged to take Calculus I in preparation for Calculus II later in the program. However, students who have already completed Calculus A may use that as the prerequisite for Calculus II.
- 2
Petitions to accept other Math or ACMS courses for this requirement will be considered, but introductory mathematics courses will generally not be approved. Restrictions (e.g., credit cannot be granted for both MATH 20610 and MATH 20580) will apply.
- 3
All electives must be taken at the 30000 level or higher, and all associated prerequisite requirements must be satisfied. Students are expected to make elective course selections in consultation with their academic advisor, reflecting their interests and, where possible, facilitating intellectual points of contact between computer science and their business major.
A more detailed overview of the course listings above.
- Completion of University Core Curriculum requirements. CSE 10001 may not be used to fulfill the University Science & Technology core requirement, due to its strong similarity in coverage to CSE 20311.
- Completion of Mendoza College of Business core requirements. (37 credits)
- Completion of all requirements for a major in the Mendoza College of Business (Accountancy, Business Analytics, Finance, Marketing, or Strategic Management)
- Completion of CSE-specific mathematics requirements (10 credits):
- Calculus I (MATH 10550) or Calculus A (MATH 10350) (Note: Students are strongly encouraged to take Calculus I in preparation for Calculus II later in the program. However, students who have already completed Calculus A may use that as the prerequisite for Calculus II.)
- Calculus II (MATH 10560)
- Discrete Mathematics (CSE 20110)
- One additional mathematics course from the list below:
- Calculus III (MATH 20550)
- Linear Algebra (MATH 20610)
- Introduction to Linear Algebra and Differential Equations (MATH 20580)
- Petitions to accept other Math or ACMS courses for this requirement will be considered, but introductory mathematics courses will generally not be approved. Restrictions (e.g., credit cannot be granted for both Math 20610 and Math 20580) will apply.
- Completion of Computer Science and Engineering coursework (29 credits)
- 17 hours of required courses: Fundamentals of Computing (CSE 20311), Data Structures (CSE 20312), Systems Programming (CSE 20289), Theory of Computing (CSE 30151), Design/Analysis of Algorithms (CSE 40113)
- 12 hours (typically four courses) of CSE electives: All electives must be taken at the 30000 level or higher, and all associated prerequisite requirements must be satisfied. Students are expected to make elective course selections in consultation with their academic advisor, reflecting their interests and, where possible, facilitating intellectual points of contact between computer science and their business major.
