MEAR 10001 First-Year Arabic I (5 Credit Hours)
This two-semester sequence of courses is a basic introduction to all aspects of the Arabic language through a comprehensive and integrated method. The focus is on language proficiency in all areas of the language including speaking, reading, and writing. The course also introduces students to aspects of Arabic culture and everyday life in the Middle East. MEAR 10001 is offered each fall semester and MEAR 10002 is offered each spring semester.
MEAR 10002 First Year Arabic II (5 Credit Hours)

MEAR 14113 Arabic Elementary II (5 Credit Hours)
Second semester elementary Arabic.
MEAR 14240 Beginning Modern Standard Arabic (6 Credit Hours)
The course is designed to equip students with a proficiency level in spoken Modern Standard Arabic in order to engage in everyday communication. The course integrates the skills of reading, writing, listening, grammar, vocabulary, and conversation. Students with prior study in Arabic will find reinforcement of Modern Standard Arabic through the media. Homestays, field excursions, and everyday interactions assist in language acquisition.
MEAR 20003 Second Year Arabic I (4 Credit Hours)
This second-year Arabic course builds on the previous two semesters. The emphasis is on speaking and writing for self-expression with continued study of the basic grammatical structures. Proficiency remains the focus through readings and conversations in the language. Students develop skill in the use of the Arabic dictionary.

MEAR 20004 Second Year Arabic II (4 Credit Hours)
This course is geared to consolidating skills gained in the previous three semesters while enhancing the ability to converse and conduct oneself in Arabic. Reading skills are enhanced by exposure to more sophisticated examples of literature. Original written expression is encouraged through the composition of short essays.

MEAR 20301 Introduction to Linguistics (3 Credit Hours)
This course emphasizes language structure, including phonetics (the sounds of language), phonology (the sound systems of language), morphology and lexicon (structured meanings in words), morphemes (units of meaning), syntax, and semantics.
MEAR 24019 Arabic for General Purposes 3b (3 Credit Hours)
The objective of this module is to enable students to develop their language competence to an intermediate level. Students will learn to perform a range of language tasks in familiar and social contexts with an emphasis on strategies for communication. The skills of reading and listening comprehension will be extended and the knowledge and use of Arabic grammar and syntax consolidated and extended. The module will provide the opportunity to deepen students understanding and appreciation of the customs, culture and society of Arabic speaking regions. This module will be delivered via small group teaching with classes having a maximum of sixteen students. Students will also have access to extra resources and materials via the Virtual Learning Environment, Brightspace.
MEAR 24031 Advanced Topics in Arabic Conversation I (Jordan) (4 Credit Hours)
Taught at a host institution. This course is designed for students with strong background in Arabic where they will be introduced to vocabulary, expressions and structures used frequently in everyday life. Students will practice them in class before they are given assignments to carry out with native speakers in real situations. They will be as well exposed and discuss a wide range of topics in class.
MEAR 24032 Jordanian Colloquial Arabic, Advanced I (3 Credit Hours)
Taught at a host institution. Essential for functioning in everyday life, colloquial Jordanian Arabic is the language of spoken communication and is used in domestic, intimate, and informal settings in the home, the workplace, and among friends and acquaintances. This course introduces students to the grammar and vocabulary of the Jordanian dialect and builds off the instruction in the Arabic language course.
MEAR 24036 Arabic Writing (3 Credit Hours)
The course is designed to improve students' Arabic writing, research, and argumentative skills through mentored completion of a final research paper in Modern Standard Arabic that is presented and defended before a panel of faculty at the end of term. Goals include improving fluency in reading and writing Modern Standard Arabic, enhancing accuracy of morphology and syntax, practicing oral presentation skills, and successfully writing papers according to standards expected for introductory courses at Jordanian universities. The program also demonstrates student's successful attainment of advanced levels of proficiency in writing. All program participants are required to attend their peers' oral defenses at the end of term. Course consists of 15 hours of individual mentoring, 20 hours of group instruction on research methods and formal writing, and 100 hours of independent student work.

MEAR 24204 Second year Arabic (6 Credit Hours)
Emphasis on speaking, reading, and writing skills in Modern Standard Arabic through classroom and field instruction. Based on in-country evaluation, students are placed in intensive beginning or intermediate classes, with further language practice of spoken Moroccan Arabic (darija) in homestays, lectures, and field visits. Moroccan Arabic and Arabic calligraphy are also part of the course.
MEAR 24998 Spoken Arabic (Beginners) (3 Credit Hours)
The Arabic course for American / international students is designed for English-speaking students. It will be conducted in English, and its content will include the fundamentals of reading and writing in Arabic, the development of basic-level speaking skills in Spoken Arabic (Palestinian dialect), the connections between Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) and its various spoken dialects, and acquaintance with Arab culture.
MEAR 24999 Spoken Arabic (Advanced) (3 Credit Hours)
The Arabic course for American / international students is designed for English-speaking students with a background in Literary Arabic (MSA) who can read and write in Arabic, have mastered the basic rules of grammar and syntax, and can comprehend Arabic texts at the level of simple news reports and articles. The course will be taught in English and Arabic. It will focus on learning the rules of Spoken Arabic (Palestinian dialect) and developing the ability to conduct conversations based on the students' existing knowledge of MSA. The learning process will also place significant emphasis on Arab culture and will offer students a wider view of Arab society in the Middle East and throughout the Arab world.
MEAR 30005 Third Year Arabic I (3 Credit Hours)
This third-year Arabic course emphasis is on developing listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in interactive settings. Vocabulary building will be the focus of drills; we will cover basic vocabulary in various authentic uses of the language. Special attention will also be given to media Arabic. Basic Arabic grammar should be completed by the end of the year. We will continue with part 2 of the KITAAB sequence. Supplementary materials, mainly from Arabic media (BBC Arabic News, newspapers, magazines), will be provided. Tests, both oral and written, will cover the textbook materials, in addition to the basic grammar and the cumulative vocabulary.

MEAR 30303 Advanced Conversational Arabic (1 Credit Hour)
This course is intended to increase spoken Arabic proficiency and socio-cultural competence by focusing on the development and enhancement of intermediate skills in speaking and listening through the use of texts and multimedia materials in Modern Standard Arabic. It also takes into consideration dialectical diversity. Class time will be spent in conversation and discussions after students read chosen texts and prepare assignments on audio-visual materials outside of class.

MEAR 33000 Exploring International Economics (1 Credit Hour)
In this special course designed for inquisitive international economics / Arabic majors, students will attend a number of lectures, panels, and seminars on campus during the semester, with a follow-up discussion for each led by either a visitor or a member of the economics or Arabic faculty. Before each session, students will be expected to complete a short reading assignment. At each follow-up session, the students will submit a 1-2 page summary and analysis of the talk, with a critical question for discussion. The goal is to encourage students to enrich their major experience by participating in the intellectual discussions that occur amongst ND and visiting scholars across the campus, distinguished alumni, and professionals in the field.
MEAR 34020 Advanced Modern Standard Arabic I (Jordan) (6 Credit Hours)
Taught at a host institution. This course complements the competency of Modern Standard Arabic (MSA for 9 hours per a week S/T/TH) achieved in previous studies of Arabic in an attempt to achieve the learning outcomes below. There will be a local materials component included in the curriculum. And we will decide tasks Portfolio with students in the weekly plans .Attention is paid to the four language skills, Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. In addition to an analysis of the novel . During the course, students become familiar with major aspects of the Jordan culture and many traditions related to Jordan in general.
MEAR 34022 Arabic Language, Advanced Arabic I (6 Credit Hours)
Taught at a host institution. Students are placed into the appropriate modern standard Arabic level based on the results of a language exam taken during orientation. In addition to the regular classroom and lab sessions, students also have supplementary small group sessions. Contact hours: 140. Recommended credit: 6 semester/9 quarter hours.
MEAR 34028 Advanced Arabic II (3-6 Credit Hours)
Taught at a host institution. Students test into this level and study customized materials in Arabic in a small group setting.
MEAR 34031 Advanced Arabic 3B (5 Credit Hours)
This unit will further develop your language skills so you are able to express yourself fully on familiar topics as well as concrete social and professional topics. You will address and comprehend some complex issues. You will practice delivering organised, coherent presentations, descriptions and narratives. An understanding of contemporary Arab societies and cultures will be enhanced through examination of supplementary authentic materials. Preparation for class and active participation in small group activities remain essential components of the unit.
MEAR 34032 Advanced Arabic (6 Credit Hours)
This course complements the competency of Modern Standard Arabic achieved in previous studies. There will be local materials, where students will use Arabic to read and discuss relevant topics in Jordan. Attention is paid to the four language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. During the course, students become familiar with major aspects of the Jordan culture and many traditions related to Jordan in general. Overall pace and material covered will be determined by the baseline proficiency level of the class. Based on the results of the proficiency test, instructors may include an extended review, including concepts covered in previous levels. In other cases, instructors may accelerate the pace and introduce new concepts at the end of term. These adjustments will be included in the weekly plans.

MEAR 40028 Introduction to Classical/Qur'anic Arabic II (3 Credit Hours)
The goal of this course is to develop a basic knowledge of Classical/qur'anic Arabic, with an emphasis on grammar and syntax overview, vocabulary acquisition, and readings of Islamic texts. The majority of the class will be spent learning classical grammar, which will serve as a foundation for understanding the structure of texts written in Classical Arabic. Using Alan Jones' Arabic through the Qur'an as our textbook, we will read selections from the Qur'an, qur'anic exegeses, hadith (Prophetic tradition), and other related material, such as Islamic legal texts. The prerequisite for this class is familiarity with beginning Arabic. The instructor will assess your level at the start of the course and make recommendations as needed. By the end of the course, students should be able to read samplings of classical texts with the aid of a dictionary. Through these readings, students will engage with major genres of the classical Arabic tradition, including historiography, theology, law, and exegesis.
MEAR 40033 Classical Arabic (3 Credit Hours)
This course equips students with skills to understand and interpret classical Arabic texts-- Qur'an, Hadith, and other legal, theological, philosophical, mystical and literary texts. It also offers a foundational understanding of Islamic sources and guides students to proper venues for academic engagement with Islam. Level 1 Arabic is required.
MEAR 40040 Arabic Folk Literature (3 Credit Hours)
This is an advanced Arabic language course designed to enhance and develop students' reading, speaking, and writing skills.
The substantial component of this course comprises a close textual study and critical analysis of a variety of selected stories from "The Arabian Nights" designed to evoke aesthetic and intellectual discussions of Arabic folk literature.
